Is learning multiple languages worth it? Scott Young believes it is:

  1. Each new language you learn opens a door to understanding a new culture;
  2. Traveling to an unfamiliar place, even with limited knowledge of the local language, can lead to delightful surprises;
  3. While learning a new language is relatively easy, maintaining fluency is challenging—and managing multiple languages is even harder;
  4. The two biggest challenges of learning multiple languages are:
    • Interference: Languages can influence one another, causing confusion.
    • Maintenance: Each language requires time and effort to sustain, and both are limited resources.
