In January, while passing through San Francisco, a friend explained why the city is ideal for startups—the most important reason being its people. Interestingly, Sam Altman had already discussed this in detail back in 2014, and their views align remarkably well:
- Silicon Valley’s success comes from its sheer number of entrepreneurs and their willingness to help each other.
- It’s a community of ‘outsiders.’ If you create something valuable, people will be willing to support you. The norm here is to ask for help even from recent acquaintances—most will gladly assist as long as you’re respectful of their time.
- Founders and early investors tend to have closer relationships than with later-stage investors. However, their strongest bonds are often with fellow entrepreneurs who were there in the earliest, most challenging days.
- Though YC’s 700+ companies are legally independent, their network is so tight-knit that YC alumni supporting each other creates a major advantage.
- Most YC founders prioritize using products from other YC companies over those from outside the ecosystem.
- Beyond a strong support network, a successful startup ecosystem requires two key factors: an environment that encourages ambitious individuals to pursue entrepreneurship and a focus on long-term gains.
- Almost everyone wants to become wealthy, but they’re willing to wait for the right opportunity.
- Sacrificing short-term profits and focusing on long-term wealth accumulation is key to building impactful companies—because great companies take time to build.
