Daily Productive Sharing 1204 - China's EV Boom

One helpful tip per day:)

Om Malik believes that China’s electric vehicle industry has made significant progress, even threatening the dominance of the U.S. auto industry:

  1. An electric vehicle is not just a car—it’s a supercomputer on wheels.
  2. In 2010, Geely acquired Volvo from Ford for $1.8 billion. The Chinese company also owns Polestar and holds minority stakes in Lotus and Aston Martin.
  3. In 2023, Tesla delivered 1.8 million vehicles, while BYD delivered 1.57 million. In 2024, Tesla delivered 1.79 million EVs, while BYD sold 1.76 million.
  4. The automotive sector has become a frontline battleground, threatening U.S. technological dominance and its ability to shape the future of the industry.
  5. China now accounts for 40% of global automobile production and has the capacity to produce at least 10 million more vehicles annually.
  6. China’s advantage lies in its robust supply chain and vertically integrated companies like BYD, which, similar to Tesla, control much of their production process to improve efficiency and cost competitiveness.
  7. China’s EV exports are primarily targeted at the Global South rather than Western markets.
  8. A century ago, Ford invented the modern auto industry and set a global standard for manufacturing. Now, Ford’s CEO suggests that the company’s future depends on learning from China.
  9. When mobile phones evolved into “computers,” Europe and Japan—despite their historical leadership—failed to adapt.
  10. In his 1946 book Concept of the Corporation, Peter Drucker described the automobile industry as the “industry of industries.”
  11. This “industry of industries,” now centered on EVs, is reshaping multiple fields, from core automotive components to software development, cloud infrastructure, semiconductors, and automation systems.
  12. Whether through imitation, subsidies, or other strategies, Chinese companies aim to secure global market share. Once they establish dominance, they can further expand their lead.
