Herbert Lui draws insight from jellyfish and elephant reproductive strategies to offer advice for navigating uncertain environments—urging us to take a cue from the jellyfish:

  1. Jellyfish follow a strategy of laying as many eggs as possible and letting them fend for themselves. Most won’t survive—less than 0.1% make it. In ecology, this is known as r-selection, or a high-reproduction strategy.
  2. Elephants, by contrast, invest heavily in raising relatively few offspring, most of whom survive to adulthood. This mirrors how humans raise children and is known as K-selection—a low-reproduction, high-investment strategy.
  3. High r-selection is well-suited for species in highly unpredictable environments—where food sources fluctuate, climates shift rapidly, or predators are abundant.
  4. High K-selection works best in relatively stable environments, where long-lived, strong individuals improve the survival odds of the group.
  5. If you’re facing a time of uncertainty—like an impending recession or geopolitical instability—it might be wise to shift toward a higher r-selection mindset.
  6. Just like r-selected species, building a portfolio of small bets is a more resilient strategy for navigating volatility.
