How should people treat someone with a severe congenital illness?

Mariah Hillis has undergone a tracheostomy and relies on a ventilator due to a congenital spinal condition. Despite these challenges, she remains strong and optimistic. She hopes others understand the following:

  1. Her illness is not her choice: Despite the hardships, she never misses a class.
  2. She wants to be heard: Feeling heard makes her feel special.
  3. Her life is different: It's not about regular work, study, and rest, but about living well before the next ICU visit.
  4. She doesn't like being stared at: However, she welcomes questions from others.
  5. Most importantly, she is human too: She has dreams, plans, and friends just like anyone else.
