Daily Productive Sharing 1156 - Reflections by Sam Altman
One helpful tip per day:)
At the start of the new year, OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, reflected on the past two years:
- There is still so much to understand, so much we don’t know, and it’s still early. But compared to when they started, they know a lot more now.
- Nearly nine years ago, they founded OpenAI because they believed AGI was possible and that it could become the most impactful technology in human history.
- At the time, few people cared about this field, and those who did mostly thought they had no chance of success.
- They always believed that a tipping point would eventually arrive, sparking the AI revolution, though they didn’t know when or how it would happen.
- Building a company at such high speed without relevant training has been a chaotic process, often taking two steps forward and one step back (or sometimes one step forward and two steps back).
- Moving at high speed in uncharted territory is an incredible experience, but it’s also extremely stressful for everyone involved. Conflicts and misunderstandings are frequent.
- He also recognized the importance of having a board with diverse viewpoints and broad experience in tackling complex challenges. Good governance requires trust and credibility.
- The past two years at OpenAI have been equivalent to a decade at a typical company. When a company grows and evolves this quickly, diverging interests are inevitable.
- Their vision remains unchanged, but their strategies will continue to evolve.
- They now have new goals that they couldn’t have understood a few years ago, and there will be future goals they can barely imagine today.
- Superintelligent tools could significantly accelerate scientific discoveries and innovation, far beyond what they could achieve on their own, and further increase societal prosperity and abundance.
- It might sound like science fiction, and even somewhat crazy to discuss now, but that’s okay—they’ve been there before and are willing to go there again.

在新年伊始,Open AI 的 CEO -- Sam Altman 回顾了过去两年:
- 还有太多需要理解的地方,还有太多我们不知道的事情,这一切依然很早。但相比刚开始时,他们已经知道得多了;
- 他们在近九年前创立了 OpenAI,因为他们相信 AGI 是可能的,而且它可能成为人类历史上最具影响力的技术;
- 当时几乎没有人关心这个领域,即使有人关注,也大多认为他们不可能成功;
- 他们一直坚信,总有一天会达到一个临界点,AI 革命会由此启动。但他们不知道具体会是哪一刻;
- 以如此高的速度建立一家企业,同时又缺乏相关培训,这是一个混乱的过程。往往是两步向前,一步向后(有时甚至是一步向前,两步向后);
- 在未知的领域以高速前进是一种不可思议的体验,但对所有参与者来说也极具压力。冲突和误解频频发生;
- 他也认识到,一个董事会需要多元化的观点和应对复杂挑战的广泛经验。良好的治理需要大量的信任和信誉。
- 过去两年的 Open AI 经历相当于普通公司十年的历程。当任何公司增长和进化如此迅速时,利益自然会出现分歧;
