One helpful tip per day:)

John Salvatier shares the most important lesson he has learned from all his practice: reality hides a surprising amount of detail.

  1. This also explains why people can easily plateau intellectually, even when they are world-class in their field.
  2. At every step and every level, there are countless details that have real, practical impact.
  3. The presence of "surprising detail" is almost a universal feature of reality.
  4. If you're a programmer, you might think that programming is uniquely tedious—but actually, everything is tedious. You just notice it more when doing new things, and programming happens to expose you to novelty constantly.
  5. The laws of physics are often simple, but their specific manifestations are complex and counterintuitive.
  6. Surprising detail isn't confined to "human" or "complicated" fields—it appears everywhere, from space travel to sewing to understanding your own inner experience.
  7. The harder the task, the more important it becomes to grasp the critical details.
  8. You might hope that these details don't matter to your task—but they do.
  9. You might also hope that important details will announce themselves when you encounter them—but they won’t. Even if they are right in front of you, you may not notice.
  10. Until you recognize them, important details are almost "invisible" to you. It’s hard to focus on them because you don't yet know what you should be looking for.
  11. This makes it easy to fall into stagnation—stuck in your current way of observing and thinking.
  12. The details you've already noticed become so familiar that they feel transparent and insignificant, while the truly important ones remain unseen.
  13. This means you could already be stuck right now—and the evidence is right in front of you, though you can’t yet see it.
  14. The direction for improvement is clear: look for the details you usually overlook.
  15. If you want to get unstuck, you must work on perceiving what you currently can't yet perceive.

John Salvatier
