Daily Productive Sharing 1258 - Changing Directions
One helpful tip per day:)
Jacob Kaplan-Moss has decided to leave the tech industry—hopefully for good, or at least for a while:
- He loves the work itself but hates his career in tech.
- He’s been working in the industry off and on for over 25 years, and his feelings about it have changed dramatically over time.
- Since at least 2016, he had been thinking about leaving, but lacked the courage to make a real change.
- Walking away from a stable, well-paying tech job is, financially speaking, a _very bad_ decision. He makes it clear he would never judge those who can’t—or don’t want to—make such a “bad” decision.
- But now that he has the ability to do it, he’s going to.
- His plan is to move into emergency medical services: he’ll begin EMT training this fall, and he’s already volunteering with the county’s search-and-rescue team.
I know a coach who made a similar choice. A few years ago, he suffered a sudden pulmonary embolism and barely made it through. After recovering, he switched careers to driving ambulances full-time and now only teaches CrossFit on the side. When I saw him again earlier this year, he looked completely different—much older. I asked if he still trains. He said yes, just not with the same intensity. If he hadn’t been training before, he might not have survived that embolism.

Jacob Kaplan-Moss
