One helpful tip per day:)

Karri Saarinen, co-founder of Linear, questions why anyone would put so much effort into building something—yet not care to make it beautiful:

  1. Even as a child, he was drawn to whether a creation showed signs of craftsmanship.
  2. That’s the essence of craft: a deep, internal drive to do something with care—not because someone is watching, but because it matters to the creator.
  3. Craft comes naturally at the beginning of creative work. But as technology made creating faster and easier, we moved away from it. Eventually, we began to feel the absence of quality—in our work and products—and that sparked a revival of craftsmanship.
  4. Yet by its very nature, craft cannot be fully outsourced.
  5. Across people and disciplines, there’s a common thread: a belief in and need for quality. Even when it’s hard, we chase that elusive sense of “rightness.”
  6. At some point, every team faces a choice between growth and craft.
  7. Quality has gravity—it pulls people in rather than needing to be pushed onto them.
  8. They believe that decisions made by three to five people with taste are better than those made by large committees.
  9. Karri realized that building a great product requires three things in harmony: a fundamental belief in quality, the skill and taste to recognize it, and a genuine concern for user experience.
