Jessica Livingston recently spoke at Bucknell University’s commencement. Her remarks were aimed at graduates who want ambitious plans but don’t yet have them—here’s how to find your own “big plan”:

1. First, recognize that your train has arrived. Up to now, most of you have been carried forward on tracks laid out for you.
2. Reality check: you can redefine yourself at any moment. You can decide to become more curious, more responsible, more energetic—and no one is going to pull out your college transcript and insist, “Wait, this person was supposed to be lazy!”
3. You need “filtering techniques.” Her favorite filter is people—surround yourself with the right ones.
4. The final piece of getting an ambitious plan is developing immunity to rejection. At first, people will dismiss you; if that stops you, you’re doomed. You must learn to ignore the doubt.
5. Social pressure is intense, but anyone who achieves great things learns to resist it.
6. You may look “delusional.” Even your parents might be too cautious.
7. Most bold ideas seem ridiculous at first—if they were obviously good, someone else would have done them already. In fact, looking “uncool” is an advantage: competitors won’t bother copying you for years.
8. If you want to be more ambitious, start steering now—don’t drift with the current.
9. Options abound, so actively choose the path that suits you best. The best way? Find interesting people and let them guide you toward bigger horizons.
