Laurie Hérault noticed that he can spend hours fully immersed in video games. If his brain can focus on a game, it should also be capable of focusing on other tasks.

  1. He found the only way he ever gets things done is by relying on pressure—such as deadlines from clients or financial stress.
  2. An FPS (first-person shooter) is built around a simple loop: aim → shoot → hit or miss. This is known as the game loop.
  3. For a game to be addictive, this loop must repeat frequently and deliver strong feedback.
  4. A game can contain multiple loops. For example, there might be a separate loop for hunting random gear. Feedback can also come from outside the main loop, like loot boxes or side quests.
  5. When all these elements combine, each loop gives a small hit of dopamine, creating a state of “flow.”
  6. Another key factor: video games are easy to start. They require almost no motivation or self-discipline to begin playing.
