For many, algebra is a nightmare, and failure to pass the algebra test can make graduation a problem. The Gates Foundation last year started a Grand Challenges award to encourage innovation in the teaching of algebra. One year later, 11 organizations have received awards, including three of the most iconic: Zearn, Mastory, and The Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE).
