Negative emotions inevitably arise in our lives, but persistent negative emotions can be harmful to our mental health. Dr. Hannah England offers a number of suggestions for dealing with this:
- First you need to recognise negative thinking when it arises.
- Once you are confident in recognising negative thoughts when they arise, you can begin to interrogate your automatic thinking patterns.
- Create distance from your thoughts.
- Start a thought diary.
- Use de-catastrophizing techniques.
