One helpful tip per day:)

Scott Young believes that reading a book's rebuttal articles can help us better understand the book:

  1. Critical thinking requires a deep and broad understanding of a specific field. When reading a book, our understanding may not be as profound and extensive as the author's, making critical thinking challenging.
  2. Rebuttal reviews are usually written by experts in the same field who have a deep and broad understanding. They often address weaker points in the original work, complementing its shortcomings.
  3. Searching "book title" + "reviews" on a search engine can lead to finding such rebuttal reviews, preferably written by scholars rather than reviewers.
  4. Tools like ChatGPT can also provide relevant results using prompts like "What are the most frequently cited objections to opinion X?"

Scott Young 认为阅读一本书的反驳文章能帮助我们更好地理解这本书:

  1. 批判性思维要求我们对一特定领域有深入而广泛地理解,而阅读一本书的时候,我们的理解不一定像作者那么深入而广泛,所以批判性思维也就无从谈起;
  2. 反驳类的书评一班都是同领域的专家所写,他们也对这一领域有深入而广泛的理解,而他们反驳的点一般都是原著中比较弱的点,正好弥补原著的不足;
  3. 使用搜索引擎检索“书名”+“评论”就能找到这样的书评,最好是读学者写的书评而不是书评者的书评;
  4. 使用 ChatGPT 之类的工具也可以获得相应的结果,prompt 是 “What are the most frequently cited objections to opinion X?”。
