While deep expertise in a given domain can lead to a successful career, it is also a more rigid approach which may limit the number of lateral opportunities.
The main advantage is that you are not starting from scratch: you can usually use some of the knowledge from your existing skills to acquire adjacent skills.
Instead of acquiring completely unrelated skills, developing adjacent skills is a way to complement what you already know.
Ideally, the new skill you choose to acquire should make you feel curious, feel relatively easy to acquire, and be useful in your current work environment.

Many quantitative funds like to recruit people with physics/math degrees to help them build their algorithms, even though these people may have no knowledge of finance/trading. Why is that? In large part because these people are logical thinkers who can also write code. So it's a logical career change.
Of course, if you didn't major in physics/mathematics, it's okay, you may have acquired skills that can be transferred to other fields. For example, if you are good at writing, you can try SEO (website optimization) or technical documentation writing; if you can design, you can try illustration, and so on. So when we try to change careers, we can talk to our friends around us, maybe they can find our transferable skills and help us better position ourselves. After all, how to position ourselves is not an easy task.
