Daily Productive Sharing 189 - Synchronous Or Asynchronous Meetings?
(The English version follows)
#work
在工作中,开会通常会占据很大一部分时间,而强调同步的开会恰恰会造成时间浪费。有没有可能把同步会议变成异步沟通?Todoist 背后的 Doist 公司总结了七种可以异步的会议,并在公司中做出了尝试:
- announcement
- status updates
- brainstorm
- kickoffs and planning meeting
- moving work forward
- reviews, feedback requests and approvals
- Anytime not everyone can make a meeting
当然他们也认为下面四种会议还是需要同步进行:
- building bonds
- timely decision-making
- very detailed or complex topics
- emotionally charged discussions
总之,他们建议可以都试试看,看看到底哪些会议适合同步,哪些适合异步。

Meetings usually take up a large part of time at work, and meetings that emphasise synchronisation can be a waste of time. The company Doist, which is behind Todoist, has identified seven types of meetings that can be held asynchronously and has tried them out in its company.
- announcements
- status updates
- brainstorm
- kickoffs and planning meetings
- moving work forward
- reviews, feedback requests and approvals
- anytime not everyone can make a meeting
Of course they also felt that the following four types of meetings still needed to be held in parallel.
- building bonds
- timely decision making
- very detailed or complex topics
- emotionally charged discussions
In any case, they suggest trying them all out to see which meetings are suitable for synchronous and which for asynchronous.

Excerpt
Because while you can always move async communication to a productive, synchronous meeting if you need to, you can never take back a meeting once you’ve had it.
With async announcements, your teammates can choose what they want to learn more about and read the thread at a time when they’re best able to process it.
Studies show that traditional brainstorming meetings produce fewer good ideas than other methods, yet they continue to be the default for many teams.
In general, only a few people make the vast majority of the contributions in brainstorming meetings because certain people are more dominant
When you start by putting everything down in written form, it’s much easier to clarify scope, timelines, and responsibilities.
There’s another benefit to async reviews: Allowing teammates to provide approvals outside of meetings can also help avoid groupthink, a phenomenon that occurs when a group’s desire for consensus hinders open debate, critiques, or voicing of opposition.
Creating a sense of community is far easier to do when you can hear your teammates’ tone of voice, see facial expressions, and feel that connection that comes from talking about non-work-related topics.
For tough conversations, like providing constructive criticism, discussing sensitive HR topics, or parting ways with employees, you’ll need to speak face to face.
