After that, his life was on a roll. And it was all because he happened to meet Kimo Williams, the owner of a musical instrument store, who told him that the academic system was designed to allow most people to complete their studies, not for those who work extra hard.

Recently, I talked to a friend who is studying for a PhD in China. He said that their department is basically delaying graduation and only one or two top students can graduate on time. I was urging him to graduate early and get a job, because in my opinion, it is normal to graduate early. I went through this myself and compressed my degree time so much that when I went to pay the tuition for my final year of undergraduate studies, it was like 24 credits or something, and those who had failed and retaken the course in front of me were shocked.

In today's story, Derek Sivers finished his undergraduate degree at Berklee College of Music in two and a half years. After that, his life was on a roll. And it was all because he happened to meet Kimo Williams, the owner of a musical instrument store, who told him that the academic system was designed to allow most people to complete their studies, not for those who work extra hard.

I was learning so fast, it felt like the adrenaline rush you get while playing a video game.
Kimo’s high expectations set a new pace for me.
He taught me that “the standard pace is for chumps” — that the system is designed so anyone can keep up.
